 Joint celebration of Maitree Diwas by Embassy of India, and

Embassy of Bangladesh

 

The Embassy of India and Embassy of Bangladesh in Jakarta jointly celebrated Maitree Diwas (friendship day) at the Hotel Le Meridien, Jakarta on 6th December, 2021. Maitree Diwas commemorates the anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relation on 6th December, 1971 between India and Bangladesh.

The decision to celebrate the Maitree Diwas on 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties was taken in March, 2021 during the visit of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi to Bangladesh. The PM attended the Golden Jubilee of Independence of Bangladesh and Birth centenary of the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The programme commenced with lamp lighting ceremony by Ambassador of India to Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Manoj Kumar Bharti and Ambassador of Bangladesh to Indonesia, H.E. Air Vice Marshal Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman.

H.E. Mr. Manoj Kumar Bharti welcomed the gathering and remarked about the close friendship between India and Bangladesh and congratulated Bangladesh on the developmental strides it has achieved since its formation. Excellency highlighted upon the close partnership India and Bangladesh have achieved in all spheres including economic and infrastructure connectivity, defense, and people to people connect.

H.E. Air Vice Marshal Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, Ambassador of Bangladesh acknowledged the unwavering support and cooperation extended by India during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Excellency aspired that the joint celebration will bring the people and the leadership of both countries to work together for attaining a vision of shared prosperity and development in future based on mutual trust and respect. In his speech the Ambassador highlighted the achievements that Bangladesh has attained under the great leadership of Honble Prime Minister of Bangladesh H.E. Sheikh Hasina.

A special documentary prepared by the Government of Bangladesh was screened depicting the struggle of Bangladesh and India’s assistance against oppressive forces. It highlighted the contribution of Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the nation building. The event ended with dinner assorted with Indian and Bangladeshi cuisines.

Bangladesh and India have a booming trade relationship. India is the second largest trade partner of Bangladesh, while Bangladesh is India’s largest trade partner in South Asia. The development partnership that both countries share is one of the most comprehensive that India has with any country. India has assisted with projects worth close to 10 billion dollars which are currently under various stages of implementation. These projects range from roadways to railways, airports to seaports and urban infrastructure to power projects.

The Maitree Diwas is being commemorated in 18 countries around the world apart from Dhaka and Delhi. The holding of Maitree Diwas is a reflection of the deep and abiding friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh that have been forged in blood and shared sacrifices.
