Visit of H.E. Ambassador of India to Democratic Republic of Timor- Leste


Ambassador of India to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste H.E. Mr. Pradeep Kumar Rawat, visited Dili, Oé-Cusse, and Atauro from 8-13 April, 2019.


During his visit to Oé-Cusse Region, Ambassador Rawat jointly launched the project “Leveraging ICT to Improve Education and Skills in Timor-Leste”, alongwith Dr. Mari Alkatiri, former Prime Minister and President of the Authority for Special Region of Oé-Cusse, and Mr. Roy Trivedi, UN Resident Representative. The project is aimed at enhancing IT literacy in schools and will cover 12 schools benefitting over 5000 children in primary and secondary schools. The IT skills will be provided through on-site IT innovation Labs and mobile IT innovation Vans. Two computers games in Tetum language will also be created to enhance computer skills and create awareness about environmental protection.It will be implemented by UNDP with funding from India under the India-UN Development Fund. The project is expected to be implemented in two years. In Oé-Cusse Ambassador called on H.E. Dr Mari Alkatiri and discussed existing and potential future cooperation programmes. Ambassador visited a remote school where the project will be implemented and an agricultural farm.


On 11th April, Ambassador visited Aaturo Island for inauguration of Sustainable Agriculture & Permaculture Learning Centre. The Centre, financed by the IBSA Fund, is located in the remotest part of Atauro. It is expected to be fully functional by July 2019 and would enhance horticultural and fisheries production as well as introduce modern management practices that would result in increased agricultural production.


In Dili, Ambassador called on H.E. Mr Dionisio da Costa Babo Soares, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations with a view to explore possibilities of enhanced cooperation in the developmental goals of Timor-Leste. Ambassador called on H.E. Mr Filomeno da Paixão de Jesus, Minister of Defence and discussed various possibilities of scaling up bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.


During the visit, Ambassador also met with Ambassadors of US, Brazil and Japan accredited to Timor-Leste and discussed matters of mutual interest. Ambassador also hosted a reception for the Indian community in Dili as also a dinner for the prominent Timorese of Indian origin.
